Papers with watermarks have a long past, surely documented is for the first time a watermark in an Italian certificate from 1282.

Predominantly in the form of trademarks or authenticity mark, historians have determined the enormous number of 175,000 watermarks for the period just between 1600 and 1800.

What is a watermark and how is it created?                                                         

Depending on the type of procedure, it is referred to

How expensive is an individual watermark ?

The original shape of the watermark results from the old technique of paper making, in which sheet after sheet is made by hand.  A time-consuming and expensive process, but in theory itis possible to work with edition 1. All machine-made watermarks, on the other hand, require a considerable minimum amount, which is usually 500 kg.

“Artificial” watermarks, as they are often called, have nothing to do with the traditional process.  Here, in a patented process, the translucent effect is only achieved retrospectively with a special ink.
